We did icebreaker activities and went over our schedule, which was displayed on a poster board with the activities in order, along with pictures. They weren’t afraid to be silly, because it helped encourage the children to interact as well.Īt the beginning of each session, everyone met in the main area of the museum. I saw that this was best accomplished when the coach was involved with the activities. I noticed that all of the counselors, or “coaches,” worked really well with their campers. There are also more traditional classrooms with chairs and tables where the children ate snacks, played, and did arts and crafts. These include a rock wall, an art section, a music section, an inventor’s section, a water section, and a sand section for digging up dinosaur bones. The Creative Discovery Museum has a variety of stations. ![]() The program, however, is free, so anyone can sign their children up to attend, regardless of their socioeconomic status. I would guess that most of the children at Club D have parents who are in good socioeconomic standing. Each Tuesday night, about twenty children from the ages of six to twelve came to the museum for two hours. It is called Club Discovery, or Club D, and it is an after-school program for children both with and without special needs. My second observation was at Chattanooga’s Creative Discovery Museum. ![]()
